Chapter 9
Jag called while Lyall drove the short distance to Ariaâs place. He could have walked, and he had plenty of times over the course of their brief relationship. But this time, he wanted to get there and back as quickly as possible.
âAny news?â Lyall asked when he pressed the green button on his dash. It was a dumb question; Jag said heâd call when he had news. But Lyall figured he could be forgiven. He had a lot on his plate at the moment. Namely, keeping Natalia safe and out of his bed. Both were pretty damn taxing tasks.
âWeâve identified the owner of the cell phone. And we know heâs human. A kid, still in high school. Weâre trying to track him down now. Iâd normally assume the rest were human, too, but you swear you saw one of them in wolf form.â
âI didnât, Natalia did,â Lyall corrected him.
âIs she 100 percent sure? I mean, there are some pretty big wolves in this area that arenât shifters. And with her family historyâ¦â
âOkay, first of all, she said the wolfâs eyes glowed, and last time I fact-checked, regular wolf eyes donât glow. And second, what the fuck are you implying about her family history?â
âIâm not implying anything. Iâm stating a fact. Her mother was crazy. That shit can be hereditary.â
âYou think Natalia is going crazy?â All he needed was for this rumor to start spreading. Natalia was already half-convinced of it herself; she didnât need wolves from his own goddamn pack suggesting it as well. If he didnât figure out a way to convince her she wasnât like her mother, he stood zero chance of keeping her around. And if he let her leave this time, she wasnât coming back. Ever again.
âLook, man, Iâm just checking all possibilities. Iâve always liked Natalia, and I had huge respect for her aunt. But I also remember her mother. The woman saw shit that wasnât there all the damn time.â
Lyall rubbed his hand over his face and ground his teeth. Jag was right; Natâs mother had hallucinated, and it got worse toward the end, to the point where she walked around town alone having full blown conversations.
âNatalia saw a wolf,â Lyall repeated. âAnd it had glowing eyes.â
âIf thatâs true, weâre dealing with a shifter-human team. Not completely out of the realm of possibility but definitely unusual. And screws with any theories we had about intent. Humans would mess with her because sheâs a witch. But why the hell would a wolf mess with her? And why pull humans into whatever fucked up game theyâre playing?â
âI thought those were the questions youâre supposed to answer.â
âHey, no need to get testy. Weâre trying.â
âYou just suggested myâNataliaâmight be fucking crazy, with no basis other than her motherâs actions. I think thatâs grounds for getting testy.â
âMan, I get that you slept with her on and off for like two decades, but you never mated. Thereâs a reason for that, you know.â
Yes, but it wasnât what Jag was implying, and Lyall wasnât in the mood to try to explainâor justify himself.
